Sunday, October 21st was a day for the hardy (or perhaps the foolhardy?) at Mallala. The temperature soared under overcast conditions with a North wind that would blow the spots off a dog. Despite the adverse conditions and high level of attrition brought about by riders suffering in the heat, the standard of competition was high and lap times were low.
Overall it was a case of cool heads in the heat with only two crashes in some very close racing. Unfortunately, a Saturday practice crash caused damage to the radiator of Ian Andrews’ Suzuki GSXR 600, which robbed spectators of the expected spectacle of the head to head battle between him and similarly mounted Stephen Liddicoat, which was looming in morning warm-up until Andrews’ bike overheated. This left Michael Brenton to dominate proceedings in the Unlimited races, hotly pursued by Liddicoat while a three way battle raged between Andy Denman, Graham Snaith and the continually improving Daniel Mutton for the final podium position. Unlimited Solo was ultimately won by Brenton on his Suzuki GSXR1000, with 3 wins from 3 starts. Second place went to Liddicoat with a third and 2 second places. Daniel Mutton prevailed over Snaith and Denman to come home third. The Steve Martin Cup results saw Liddicoat victorious over Mutton, with Snaith third. Yamaha R1 mounted Adam Christie looked certain to be the dominant rider in the Reece Bancell Trophy events, but a crash at the Southern Hairpin in race 2 saw him relegated to fourth overall. The win went to Daniel Mutton on the Honda CBR1000RR who was able to capitalise on Christie’s crash to snatch a win from Michael Blunden who finished second with a brace of second places. Graham Snaith on the “Hyosung” R1 finished in third. In D Grade it was GSXR1000 rider Steve Leach taking the win with 3 first places, followed home by Darren Hansberry on another GSXR1000 and David McDeed in third on a Honda CBR1000RR. Limited Solo was shaping up as a battle of the SV650’s as Adam Dawes and Paul Barker went head to head on matching Michael Hewitt fettled machines. Unfortunately, Barker crashed heavily at turn 2 in a Bracket race, retiring for the day, leaving Dawes to dominate the field. A battle raged between Brian Rosser on the Ducati 520 and Martyn Hockham on his Yamaha Supermono for the minor placings with Rosser taking second and Hockham third. In the third Historic race we witnessed the closest finish seen in recent times with John Whallin mugging Danny Ahern in turn 7 and beating him to the line by half a tyre width. Ultimately, Whallin won the day on his 500cc Mac Velo from Leonard Rowe, Yamaha LC 250 and Danny Ahern, Matchless G50. A number of new competitors fronted the starter for Bracket Racing with a couple returning maiden wins. Fernando Vantagiato finally cracked it for an outright victory in Division One and announced his retirement from Brackets to open competition. Row 2 was won by novice rider Ian Riley, row 3 by former sidecar passenger Tony Oakes and row 4 by Brian Rosser after more titanic battles with Marty Hockham and TRX850 mounted Kym Cowley. Division 2 Brackets saw long time campaigner Steve Frost snatch a victory from 3 hungry newcomers, all showing promise of what is to come. Notable among them Gary Harmon-Hobbs riding a Buell Firebolt XB12R, who broke out in 2 of his 3 races. Row 2 was won by another newcomer in Ben Kruger. The final round of the combined Sonnex Reece Bancell Trophy and Race Bike Services Steve Martin Cup series will be held at Mallala on December 16th, with practice on the 15th. The final round will incorporate the Café Racer Club Championship with over $8,000 prize money on offer. The Café Racer Club thanks its series sponsors, Bridgeland Motorcycles; Ducati Adelaide; Hood Sweeney Technology; Race Bike Services; Show & Go Motorcycles; Sonnex Laser; Steve Cramer Products and club supporters Brit Bikes; Neville Lush Racing; Red Knot Wines; Underground Designs; Top Coat Motorcycles for their continuing support of this exciting series. We also thank Bills Motorcycles; Bridgeland Motorcycles; Coast Yamaha; Docteur Desmo; Ducati Adelaide; GC Motorcycles; Japanese Motorcycles and Dismantlers; Yamaha World for their combined efforts to provide partial tyre sponsorship to all of the competitors. This assistance to the riders helps us to help them keep on racing.

Saturday’s ride day and practice started out with a wet track, but it was close to dry by 11:30. Then the rain came in and after a heavy fall we returned from lunch to a track much like when we arrived in the morning. With showers forecast for Sunday, it was anybody’s guess. As it happened, the gods of motorcycle racing smiled upon us and we had a mild, overcast day and a clean, dry track for racing. And racing we had!
Although entries were a little down on what we had hoped for, the standard of competition was high. A large contingent of riders from Mt Gambier, combined with strong fields of Historic competitors meant we were in for some action packed races. Ian Andrews dominated both Superstock and Unlimited Solo events, although he was headed for a number of laps by Michael Brenton in one race. In Superbike, Michael Brenton and Sean McKay took a win and a second each, Sean winning the day on a count back from Michael, with Dan Mutton third after strong rides back through the field following start line wheelstand problems. Adam Christie, Paul Saade and Ashley Manuel made it a Coast Yamaha trifecta in Superstock, with Mt Gambier rider Darren Trotter, snatching one third place away from them with a strong ride in the first race, for fourth overall, from David Van Hooff. Steve “Smiley” Kerr showed you don’t have to be on the latest bike to be in the points, bringing home his Triumph TT600 in 9th place. Possibly the biggest upset of the day (pun intended) was Levi Day taking 2 race wins in 125cc GP from Mandy Beales in second and Jack Wright in third. Paul Radford won the Pro Twins and Adam Dawes the Naked Bike class. I understand that there were again a number of PB’s on the day. Sean McKay with his fastest ever standing lap at a 1:13 point something and a solid 1:09; Ian Andrews within a second of the class lap record set at this year’s ASC round; Dan Mutton getting faster all the time etc. Congratulations to everyone who participated. There are many names not mentioned but all are deserving of praise for getting out there and giving it a shot.
The provisional progressive points for the SA Championships after Round 2. We expect that there will be a revision to the Round 1 results re Steve Kerr's inclusion in Pro Twins. This will likely effect the points in both Pro Twins and Superstock.

Warm blustery conditions greeted competitors at Mallala for Round 2 of the 2007 Sonnex Laser Reece Bancell Trophy Series at Mallala on Sunday March 18th. The prevailing wind direction was pushing riders down the start finish straight into turn 1 and side on to them in the super fast turn 4, making riding conditions tricky.
The Sonnex Laser Reece Bancell Trophy field was down in size on the previous round, but the quality was still there. Adam Christie was again in strong form on his Yamaha R1, putting it on pole with a 1:11.470 on his final lap of qualifying. Alongside him were Michael Blunden (Yamaha R1), Daniel Mutton debuting his 2007 Honda CBR1000RR and Graham Snaith (Yamaha R1). Race 1 saw Adam Christie lead from start to finish while Snaith and Blunden battled for the minor placings, finishing in that order after Snaith put in the fastest lap of the race (1:11.370) on lap 3 to make the pass on Blunden stick. Ashley Manuel held fourth until the final lap when Steve Leach, who had been working his GSXR 1000 forward throughout the race, passed to take the place. Aaron “Chocky” Denys fell victim to Leach’s progress 2 laps earlier to finish sixth. In race 2 it was Blunden who prevailed after hounding Snaith for the first 2 laps, with Christie a distant third followed by Mutton (back on his CBR 600 after a crash on the Fireblade) and Leach in close company. In the third and final race, Blunden opened with a salvo of fast laps to lead from the start, Snaith and Christie battled briefly before Snaith broke away, again putting in the fastest lap of the race, leaving Christie to defend third position against the approach of Leach, Mutton, Manuel and Denys in close company. Ian “Easy” Andrews put in a 1:09.470 lap on his Suzuki GSXR 600 Supersport bike take pole for the combined Race Bike Services Steve Martin Cup and Unlimited Solo. Matt Childs (Yamaha R6) was missing following a huge crash at turn 4 in Saturday practice which hospitalised him and destroyed the bike. Sean McKay (Suzuki GSXR 1000) sat alongside with Adam Christie (Yamaha R1), Michael Blunden (Yamaha R1), Stephen Liddicoat (Suzuki GSXR 600), Andy Denman (Yamaha R1), and Daniel Mutton filling out the first 2 rows in the strong 15 bike field. Once again the day belonged to Andrews with 3 wins from 3 starts to secure the Unlimited Solo. Our favourite Kiwi, Dennis Charlett, missed qualifying and race 1, helping out other riders in the pits, but took second place in races 2 and 3. He later lamented, “If I’d done some more track time, I reckon I could have been right with Easy in the last race.” Liddicoat finished second, ahead of Denman, Snaith and Michael Ellis (Kawasaki ZX10) back after 2 years away from the scene. The Race Bike Services Steve Martin Cup round was won by Stephen Liddicoat, with two race wins and a second place, from Andy Denman with a win and two seconds from Graham Snaith with three third places. In the second race the competition between Denman and Liddicoat was at it’s keenest with both riders dipping into the low 11’s (Denman 1:11.200; Liddicoat 1:11.110) in the chase, which saw Denman finish only .050 behind A grader Charlett, in the Unlimited field. A strong grid of 18 bikes fronted the starter for the Historic events. Historic Group 1 witnessed the second race outing of the returned famous pairing of Bill Horsman and the Gerry Koistra prepared Honda CB72. Now visibly more comfortable on the machine, Horsman took 3 wins from 3 starts, followed home by Bob Glynn (BSA B31) and Mick Sandley (Honda H100). Group 2 was won by Richard Van Wyk (McIntosh Suzuki 1000) from Richard Ramsey (Yamaha LC250) and Jonathon Gutte (Suzuki T250). Bracket Racing again served up a treat with a wonderful mix of bikes within the field and taking home trophies. Division 1, row 1 was won by Paul Saade (Yamaha R6) taking two wins and a second place from Fernando Vantagiato two second places and a win. Row 2 was won by John Snoad (Suzuki Bandit 1200) from Richard Stanley (Honda VTR1000 SP1) who broke out in the first race. Row 3 was lead home by Alister Gosse (Honda VTR 1000 SP1), with Luke Joyce (Honda CBR1000RR) serving notice on the rows ahead, breaking out in both the second and third races. Division 2 bracket winners were row 1, Phil Wilson (Yamaha TRX850), row 2, Andy Nicholls (Kawasaki ZXR 750) and row 3, Bazza Warren (Ducati Pantah 500) from Teresa Dunn (Kawasaki ZX6) who broke out in her first race back after more than a year out with injuries. In 2007, the four rounds of the Sonnex Laser Reece Bancell Trophy and Race Bike Services Steve Martin Cup series also represent the South Australian Sportsbike Tyre Warmers Club Cup. There is a long break now, while the national and state championships run, before round three of the series, which will again be hosted by Phoenix MCC at Mallala on November 4th. Entry forms will be available from the Café Racer Club website www.caferacerclub.com, Phoenix MCC website www.phoenixmcc.org.au , or by phoning Phoenix MCC club secretary Glen Seidel on 0417 821 061. The 2007 Sonnex Laser Reece Bancell Trophy Series commenced in glorious conditions at Mallala on Sunday February 25th. The fine clear weather was a welcome relief after the oppressive humidity encountered during practice on Saturday. A workshop session on track lines presented by Michael Brenton to the newer riders on the Saturday afternoon proved invaluable, with many of the novices producing significant improvement, resulting in some excellent racing displays throughout the well subscribed fields.
The Sonnex Laser Reece Bancell Trophy picked up from where it left off in 2006 with a fully subscribed entry comprising 18 C Grade and 22 D Grade riders. Adam Christie mounted on his Yamaha R1 took the C Grade honours, along with outright victory, from two wins and a second place. He was hounded by Michael Blunden, and Graham Snaith also riding Yamaha R1’s. Blunden took a win, a second and a third for second place and Snaith a second, a fifth and a third for third. All three riders dipped into the 1’ 11” laps in the chase, Blunden putting in a pair of 1’ 10”s in the second race, providing some exciting racing. D Grade was won by Suzuki GSXR 1000 mounted Steve Leach with 3 grade wins, from Jarrod Barker (R1 Yamaha), two thirds and a fourth and Matthew Cooper (Suzuki GSXR 1000) with a second and two thirds. The combined Race Bike Services Steve Martin Cup and Unlimited Solo was certain to deliver further excitement when Ian “Easy” Andrews put in a 1’ 9.82” lap on his not yet fully developed Suzuki GSXR 600 Supersport bike in qualifying to take pole. Behind him were Matt Childs (Yamaha R6), Stephen Liddicoat (Suzuki GSXR 600), Michael Blunden (Yamaha R1), Adam Christie (Yamaha R1), Graham Snaith (Yamaha R1), Andy Denman (Yamaha R1) and Sean McKay (Suzuki GSXR 1000), making a welcome return to the track, all covered by less than a second. The day belonged to Andrews, carrying his dominant form into the new season with 3 wins. The Race Bike Services Steve Martin Cup round was won by Stephen Liddicoat, with two race wins and a sixth, on a count back from Andy Denman with a win and two seconds. Third was Joel Tozer, back after some time out last season, with two sevenths and a fourth – remarkable after a crash at turn 8 in the second heat of the Reece Bancell which saw he and his machine under the air fence. A DNF for Snaith, and a missed race for Christie cost them dearly in the points chase. The Limited events were a clean sweep for Yamaha TZ 250 mounted David Healey, from Brett Withy on his aging Suzuki RGV250 (still managing to lap in 1’ 20”) with 2 seconds and a fifth and Joe Ahern (Honda RS 125) with three thirds, one point ahead of similarly mounted Chris Rowen and a further 3 points back to Ryan Seaman, also on a Honda RS 125. Historic Group 1 was dominated by Danny Ahern (Matchless G50) with 3 wins, from Richard Rake (Norton Domi-racer) and Mick Sandley (Honda H100). Group2 were led home by Chris Hudson (Honda CB750), from Adrian Coles (Yamaha LC 250) and Brian Peak (Ducati 900 GTS). Bracket racing saw a 3 way tie for division 1, row 1 with novice Ben North (Honda Fireblade) taking a win at his first race meeting, on count back from Fernando Vatagiato (Suzuki GSXR 600) and Shaun Casey (Yamaha Thunderace 1000) – each rider having a first, a second and a third to his credit. Other division 1 winners were Paul Saade (Yamaha R6), Kym Davey (Honda CBR 600), Darren West (Honda CBR 1000) and Ben Vanderline (Suzuki GSXR 1000). Division 2 bracket winners were Richard Carter (Yamaha WR 450F), Tim Lindsay, Chris Hudson (Honda CB750), Bazz Warren (Ducati Pantah 500) and Leonard Rowe (Yamaha LC 250). The Café Racer Club thanks its series sponsors, Bridgeland Motorcycles; Ducati Adelaide; Hood Sweeney Technology; Race Bike Services; Show & Go Motorcycles; Sonnex Laser; Steve Cramer Products and club supporters Brit Bikes; Neville Lush Racing; Red Knot Wines; SA Dirt Bikes for their continuing support of this exciting series.
