The
Prez says…
How lucky are we?
Not only do we get regular reports from DJ and Steve Martin, we are now able to
watch closely as DJ gets a break with the step from the British Superstock
series into the Superbikes. Billy McConnell has big news for us too. See the
reports below. Not quite as good as being there, but as close as most of us will
get to witnessing the birth of new stars.
On
another front, there is a lot of work going into planning for our November
meeting and setting the scene for the club’s 2006 season. This was the centre of
some impassioned debate at the October 4th club meeting and the clear
focus of the survey which the club will send to you in the next few days. I urge
you to participate in the survey, honestly and openly. Your answers and comments
will be considered in the planning we are undertaking. If you want to influence
the direction of the sport, whether to stay on the same course or make a sharp
turn, this is the opportunity. Please don’t let it slide by without
comment.

Bancell Trophy Round 3
Mallala. Fine one day, raining the next. Despite the non stop rain on Sunday, there was some great racing. Well done to the competition committee. The meeting went well despite the challenge the weather threw at us. The Reece Bancell events again saw the fiercest competition of the weekend, with the battle at the top of the points table continuing. Barry Warren shone in the wet on Sunday putting in some stirring rides on his Pantah, urged on by Ducatisti announcer Brenton Hounslow. There are a heap of photo’s coming to the website shortly courtesy of regular photographer Ned and a newcomer (to the club website, not photography) Ben Freer. Ben has an excellent sequence of another photographer, Damir Ivka, coming to grief in the wet practice on Sunday.
Speaking of coming to grief, Mallala claimed it’s fair share of victims over the weekend. I was moved and heartened by the show of support and concern by competitors for the safety and welfare of fallen riders and their equipment. The community is strong. Well done to everyone concerned.
On
the Subject of Crashing…
Once the bike
has been crashed, the question is what can you do to minimise the repair bill?
If you are going to have your frame, forks, axles and disks checked (a good idea
if it was more than a simple low side), you can save $’s by preparing the bike
for the work before you take in for repairs. Remove all bodywork. Remove as much
electrical as possible from around the steering head. Remove exhaust, foot pegs
and controls. If you are confident to do so, remove the front end i.e. wheel,
axle, forks and clamps. Take these with the bike – they need to be checked too.

Championships Round 1 & Master of
The weekend of October 1st and 2nd saw myself, Rob, Clair and Kerry Bulte plus Kym Anderson at Mt Gambier providing timekeeping for the first race meeting to use their new facilities. I didn’t see much of the racing, despite the fine vantage offered by the timing box, being head down over a computer all weekend, but the excitement levels were at fever pitch as the outright lap record fell 3 times over the weekend. It went to John Tuchyna first, and then to Ashley Roe on the Saturday. John snatched it back on Sunday, but it was Ashley Roe who became the new Master of Mac Park. The sidecar lap record also fell to local boys Stephen Jones and Jay Budarick on the ex Neville Lush, Australian championship winning R1 powered machine. Neville and his passenger Martin Scott made a welcome return to the track after an absence of almost 12 months on a newly constructed Formula 2 (600cc) outfit. The club was well represented with some great rides from Michael Brenton, Dennis Charlett, Scott Christie, Amanda Ford, James Jay, Chris Leisavnieks, Paul Radford, Richard Stanley, John Snoad and Rob Vikuckis. Also riding were Glynn Foot, Bob Hartvigsen, Steve Waller, Paul McMenamin, Mark Jonas, Nigel Agar (the only rider in the NK Lites class) and Simon Willgoose. The combined Naked Bike, NK Lites, Pro Twins and Superstock races provided fields with Michael Brenton and Chris Leisavnieks battling it out at the pointy end and good groups of competition throughout. The fields were bolstered with Victorian riders from Hartwell and North West Victorian clubs, which kept us on our toes in the tower. Historic fields had enough riders for a separate Period 5 Unlimited class with 9 of the increasingly popular Yamaha LC 250’s. Mat Childs had engine troubles, breaking a camshaft(!) and contested the Period 5 Master of Mac on Richard Van Wyk’s McIntosh Suzuki rather than his own.

Who
is John Snoad?
With the help of Boof (Rachel) we grilled him and came up with an
interesting picture. At age 19 he met his first love, a 1939 Harley 1200. John
soon saw the light and began his road racing career at Adelaide International
Raceway in 1974. Starting with a Suzuki T20, he then rode a Yamaha RD350 and the
awe inspiring (my words not his -
Hattie) Kawasaki Mach 3, 500. More recently John has owned a Ducati
916 and then returned to racing, through Brackets, on a naked Suzuki Bandit. If
you’ve seen him ride, you will recall his angular form and fine performances on
the big beast. “It’s a great feeling being able to look through a naked bike
down to the track”, said John. “And it’s really important to enjoy the race and
relax – and if you’re not, then you’ve really got to ask yourself why.” John’s
best lap at Mallala on his Bandit is 1:16. “Mallala is a hard track to learn,
with no flowing corners. The best
tip I can give is to master the turn 2 left-hander”, he said. “When you push
yourself to the limits, you need to be aware of what headspace you’re in, and if
you constantly want to go hard, then you really have to be awake”. John’s
current ambition, besides from contributing to the committee and Club, is to
better his Bandit laptimes on his Superstock Suzuki GSXR 600.
In his spare time, John manages his own shade-sail and blind business “Shade Craftsman”, enjoys fresh fruit, vegetables, pasta, sushimi, and Coopers Pale Ale.
John’s biggest influence and mentor was his parents – and a poster of a determined Mick Doohan with a sparkle in his eye, Ilazaroff leg braced and gaunt in 1992, pinned to his bathroom wall.

The team isn't putting any

that is realistic. Who knows, maybe I will surprise myself and do better. I’m
pretty exited!

re-signs for Foggy PETRONAS Racing
Carl Fogarty has re-signed Steve Martin for
his Foggy PETRONAS Racing team for the 2006 Superbike World Championship
campaign. The 36-year-old Australian’s skill and determination has impressed
Fogarty during a difficult season for FPR in a rejuvenated championship. Carl
said: “I am very pleased Steve is staying with us for next year. He is very
highly thought of within the sport and he is great to have around the place. He
always gives 100 per cent in both racing and during testing and development of
the bike. He is probably the best all-rounder we have had riding the PETRONAS
FP1.”
Steve said: “I am really happy to stay with FPR for next year,
especially after the amount of progress that we have made. We are now
consistently in the top ten and I believe we have not finished improving the
bike yet. The guys that I have been working with have showed me a whole new
level of professionalism and that has been a major influence in my decision.”
Steve has achieved five podium finishes and three pole positions in his
133 race starts since his debut in the championship in 1988. The highlight of
this campaign was qualifying in second place on the

Steve
Martin reports from Imola
Steve Martin achieved Foggy PETRONAS
Racing’s best result of the season when he finished fifth in the first race at
Imola today. But the Australian was denied the chance of a repeat performance
when the second race of the penultimate round of the Superbike World
Championship was cancelled due to appalling weather conditions, resulting in
Troy Corser clinching the title.
Although the riders formed the grid in
the afternoon, many indicated at the end of the warm-up lap that the conditions
were too dangerous, prompting race control to abandon the start after a lengthy
delay. However, conditions were not as clear cut in the morning and, having
decided at the last minute to run on slick tyres on a drying track, Steve worked
his way through the field from 15th at the end of the first lap as the riders
who had chosen intermediate front tyres paid the price as the race
progressed.
With six laps remaining Steve started to close two seconds a
lap on Chris Walker in fifth place and eventually passed him on the penultimate
bend of the final lap, prompting celebrations on the FPR pit-wall. Steve said:
“I am stoked to have achieved my best result on the PETRONAS FP1 in my 100th
World Superbike race finish. I wanted to use an intermediate front because the
track was pretty damp but the boys talked me into using slicks at the front and
rear. I am grateful they were strong and stuck to their guns, although I was
worried in the first few laps as a few guys were flying past me. But I managed
to pull them back in the last few laps and I was really happy with my lap times
in those conditions. I could barely see Chris with three laps to go but, after
seeing my last lap board I knew I could catch him by the middle sector. I passed
him at the bottom of the hill at Rivazza, where I had passed a few others too,
as I didn’t want to leave it to the final corner.
“I think it was the
correct decision to abandon the second race. There was no grip and a lot of
standing water. This is the kind of circuit where, if someone crashes, the bike
or the rider ends up in the middle of the track and, as there was no vision, it
would have been asking for trouble. It’s a shame because we had a great first
race and I have been getting on well with the bike in the wet. But I would have
hated to have hurt myself and missed the final round at Magny-Cours next week
because, although the bike has made yet more steps forward this weekend, I am
sure it will go even better there.”
The performance earned lavish praise
from team owner Carl Fogarty. He said: “Steve rode fantastically and kept his
head when many others didn’t. He had confidence in the bike and the tyres and
came through with a very good professional performance on race day, having been
impressive all weekend in qualifying.”
As I was wrapping up this issue, I received a message
from the Foggy Petronas team advising that Steve has qualified 14th
at Magny Cours in Superpole after crashing his number 1 bike in practice. The
race will have been run and won, and the season over by the time this issue is
out, but I understand that he will roll straight into a heavy program of off
season testing.

Bancell Trophy Round 4 – coming soon
It’s no secret
that despite the quality of the on track action, the club has taken a financial
beating over the first 3 rounds of the series. In response to that we have
dropped the Friday practice day for November and will be running a combined
practice and ride day on Saturday 26th November with a one day race
meeting on the Sunday. There will be more news on this as we set out to turn on
our biggest race meeting of the year for the final round. We’re aiming to get
