Café Racer Club 2004 Series announced

At the club meeting on January 6th club president Richard Wilkinson announced dates for the four round Cafe Racer Club series for 2004 (see below). This will incorporate the three round "Race To The Stars" for club member C and D grade riders.

Club members entering each of the meetings in the series will be entitled to purchase one set of (180/55-R17 & 120/70-F17) Michelin Pilot or Pilot Race tyres at a discounted price of $395 with their entry. Other sizes and styles will be available but will require prior notice so they can be ordered in. Richard said, "The Cafe Racer Club always looks to innovate and find creative ways to help riders get on the track and stay there. The costs of putting on a race meeting are relatively fixed which limits our flexibility with entry fees. What we have done instead is negotiate a deal for our members to save them in the order of $150 on a set of tyres, each time they come out to race. Running costs, not entry fees, are the biggest problem for the majority of riders and we believe this will go a long way towards helping them get out there. Prize money is only paid at the pointy end of the field, this support helps everyone." Negotiations continue with distributors to introduce other tyre brands.

"Race To The Stars" is a series for club member C and D grade riders which will be run over two races at each of the first 3 rounds. Events will be run under an interclub permit enabling riders on One Event Licenses to participate. After the end of the third round, the top three point scorers will receive an entry to the Phillip Island Stars of Tomorrow meeting in November, paid for by the club. There will be some dollars to help them with travelling expenses ($200 first, $100 second, $50 third) and the tyre deal will be extended for that meeting. If a rider is unable to take up the offer, it will be extended down to the next highest point scorer. "This initiative demonstrates the Cafe Racer Club's commitment to the ongoing development and advancement of our riders through all levels of competition." said Richard. "We want to see Cafe Racers participating and winning at every level of the sport."

Did that say D Grade?

The January meeting of MSA’s Road Race Committee voted unanimously to introduce D Grade as the entry level to open competition. As a result, all riders who have raced in open competition prior to the start of the 2004 and are ungraded (not A or B) will be graded as C. New starters will be graded as D. This provides one more stepping stone and brings S.A. into line with the Eastern states.

On the subject of grading

The same meeting also agreed to trial a method of grading based on a percentage of difference from peer competitors at the same event. Traditionally in S.A. grading has been by consensus of the committee members based on the number of points collected by riders in open competition throughout the season. This method will continue for 2004 while the new method is trialled. Committee members are wary that neither method is necessarily sufficient within itself and both the percentages and benchmark competitors are yet to be established. A similar method is in use in Victoria where riders consistently within 4% of the benchmark A grader are graded to A, the next 4% time gap represents B grade etc. These percentages will be used in the initial trial. A spreadsheet has been set up to assist the process and enable the committee to experiment with the percentages.

Speaking of the website, it’s hosted by our good friends (and club members) at Technology Partners www.tpaus.com.au and they provide me with a monthly breakdown of activity on the site. For December 03 we had just under 6,000 pages viewed by 2,260 visitors to the website. Where from? Over half from Australia, but then, in order, from the US, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, Canada. We also see some small rate of hits from US Military, Germany, Denmark, Japan, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Argentina, Romania, Mexico and Thailand. Talk about global reach! Remember to follow the link from our home page to Technology Partners next time you’re on the website, you might just snap up a bargain priced computer system. Maybe they’re the right people to assist with your business application development and support. Either way, they look after us and can do the same for you.

Editorial Footnote

I think I’m over Christmas. My waistline isn’t, but the kids are back at school, traffic’s heavy (for Adelaide) and work’s back to normal.

They say that some things change and others stay the same. I think everything slowly evolves. After a good few years of demonstrating to the other clubs in S.A. what a good thing Bracket Racing can be, we see the first signs of movement from Phoenix with them running their first Interclub events in February, not under Bracket rules, but without tyre warmers, so halfway there. Good on them for giving it a try, I say. We’re evolving too. Just like we always have. Watch for some exciting news as the year rolls on.

A whole new season of road racing is about to kick off. Oddly enough it begins with presentations of last year’s awards. Quaint tradition. Let the battle begin.
